Fiber to Cure Colitis

The first thing doctors want you to do is a diet low in fiber.  This is the total opposite of what you need to do to cure your colitis.  This is like when they used to bleed people to cure a cold in the 1700’s.  The medical establishment, subconsciously or otherwise, will try to keep your colitis in tact so you can continue taking all the steroids and drugs and even having your colon removed. While steroids will reduce inflammation, it takes a toll on the rest of your body like robbing Peter to pay Paul.  Steroids weaken the immune system and your ability to fight of infections.  You can die of strep throat or pneumonia because of steroids. The doctors won’t bother to tell you about any of this.  I nearly died of blood poisoning because of the steroids I was on – I couldn’t fight off the infection.  When I got out of the hospital I threw all my medications in the trash can and began to get well.  To cure your colitis you have to go to the source of the problem.  You have to change your diet and keep it that way.  If you stay in the meds and steroids you have a one way ticket to frequent illness and painful colitis bouts.  Some people have already mentioned these but I wish to testify on the stand that you will CURE colitis if you have lots of fiber, psyllium, raw fruits and veggies, drink lots of water, take bromelain, probiotics, slippery elm, digestive enzymes and get the stress out of your life.

Cabbage as Colitis Natural Remedy

For a colitis home remedy I have found that works for me.  Very important is to eat cabbage and drink cabbage juice as this will bring the inflammation under control.  Doing this is very important.  Also drink lots of vegetable juice.  Another think is to take flax seed oil for the omega-3 oils because these are proven to prevent inflammation.  These will eliminate your need to take steroids.  Also important is taking a good probiotic to make sure the gut is populated with all the helpful good bacteria that are necessary for proper intestinal function.  Excessive bread and dairy during a flair up is not good.  I have changed to a diet that has no meat except fish and this has helped tremendously.  Red meat always causes inflammation.  I hope this has been helpful for you.

Colitis and Traditional Chinese Medicine

Colitis is a condition characterized by an inflamed colon.  It can be very painful and the person afflicted will usually have frequent sessions of diarrhea often accompanied by bleeding.  The person should first be tested for food allergies before any treatment is undertaken.  According to Chinese medicine, colitis can be caused by numerous things.  These can be what we call deficiency and cold in the stomach and spleen and also it can be due to dampness and heat, blood or food stagnation, blocked flow of chi and yin deficiency.

In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) “deficiency” is characterized by an energetic weakness. This can be the result of poor blood quality and bodily fluids or also a lack of yang and yin chi.  Deficiency of these types are typically observed in chronic internal illness or in the progressive stages of external diseases.

Complaints of colitis are somewhat common and it is a troublesome condition.  It typically responds very positively to treatment with Chinese medicine.  Orthodox Western medicine treats the symptoms with surgery to remove the affected part of the colon or with steroid drugs.  However this does nothing to remove the underlying cause.  Chinese medicine aims at removing the cause of the disease.  A TCM practitioner will usually not prescribe the same thing universally for all colitis sufferers but will tailor the approach after making a physical examination and diagnosis.  Common herbs prescribed for colitis are poria, peony, dandelion, astrgalus and ginseng.

Chinese medicine classifies most ulcerative intestinal disease, including colitis, as a spleen deficiency.  Spleen qi is regarded as necessary to support health in the intestines.  Li Gao, during the Yuan Dynasty (1271 – 1368 AD), formulated the spleen/stomach school. This method treated most illnesses by giving herbs for these organs.  One of his greatest contributions to Chinese medicine was to prescribe a combination of Astragalus and Ginseng (Buzhong Yiqi Tang which literally means a mixture to regulate the qi and tonify the center).  Today this is the foundation for most therapies for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.  The most widely researched version of this basic concoction is the prescription known as Jianpiling (literally meaning the effective therapy for maintaining the spleen function).  Here are the ingredients in Jianpiling:

Astragalus Astragalus membranaceous)
Codonopsis (Codonopsis pilosula)
Atractylodes (Atractylodes macrocephala)
Tang-kuei (Angelica sinensis)
Ginger, roasted (Zingiberis officinalis)
Licorice (Glycyrrhiza uralensis)
Peony (Paeonia lactiflora)
Saussurea (Jurinea souliei)
Mume (Prunus mume)
Catechu (Acacia catechu)
Corydalis (Corydalis bulbosa)

This formula has small modifications from the Astragalus and Ginseng mixture.  Ginseng has been replaced by Codonopsis and this has become common practice for nearly all such formulas in modern China.  The first 6 items are from the original mixture with fresh ginger being replaced by roasted ginger.  This is often done when diarrhea is present.  The added ingredients are for treating diarrhea (saussurea, mume, peony), bleeding (catechu) and pain (corydalis.)
