Ingrown Hairs Natural Remedies & Home Remedies

Brown Rice Exfoliant

Removing dead skin is one of the easiest ways to prevent ingrown hairs.  The ingrown hairs are typically made worse by not taking care of your skin.  You can use these great natural remedies to exfoliate and scrub your skin to avoid ingrown hairs.  My favorite exfoliant is made by using brown rice and honey.  Simply grind brown rice until it turns into a flour consistency.  Then, mix enough honey with the “flour” to make a paste.  Use this paste as an exfoliant.  You can also make an exfoliant with bananas and sugar.  Blend these ingredients together to make another wonderfully natural exfoliant that feels especially luxurious for the skin.  By keeping your skin well exfoliated, you'll notice a drastic decrease in the number of ingrown hairs.

Sugar Lemon Cider Mask

Whenever my husband has an ingrown hair, I also whip up this homemade facial mask for him.  Not only is it a great exfoliator, but it also helps to alleviate any pain that he has from the ingrown hairs.  To make the mask, I mix one cup of sugar with the juice of half of a lemon, two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar, one and a half teaspoons of cornstarch and a quarter cup of honey.  To make the mask, I'll squeeze the lemon into a microwave safe bowl, add the honey, cornstarch and sugar.  Mix the ingredients well and heat for a few minutes.  After the mixture has cooled slightly, add the apple cider vinegar.  This is a great natural home remedy for ingrown hairs that is also great for the skin.

Aloe Vera as Home Remedy for Ingrown Hair

Aloe vera is widely used for it's many healing properties, and this natural remedy is also very beneficial for treating ingrown hairs.  Simply apply twice a day to the ingrown hair.  This should be repeated for three days.  Be sure to purchase an aloe vera product that is natural and does not contain alcohol.  This will help to reduce inflammation and pain.

Salt and Peppermint Oil

Salt mixed with peppermint oil is a fantastic natural remedy for ingrown hairs.  It's best to use Dead Sea Salt, but regular salt will work as well.  Make a mixture of these two ingredients and use it to gently scrub away dead skin.  Keeping dead skin away is one of the best preventative and all natural remedies to keep you free of ingrown hairs.

Shaving Techniques

If you already have an ingrown hair, do not shave over it.  Dragging a razor across the surface of an ingrown hair will only make the pain worse and can irritate it and cause the infection to be worse.

You can alleviate the pain from ingrown hairs by doing some basic maintenance before shaving.  Try using a beard pick, a pair of tweezers or a straight pin to lift out any ingrown hairs.  This home remedy not only keeps existing ingrown hairs from getting worse and getting infected, but it keeps others from forming.

Shaving can be very traumatic for the skin and tends to make ingrown hairs worse.  To avoid this, a great home remedy is simply to prepare your skin before you shave.  A great way to prepare the skin before shaving can be with warm towels or warm water.  Showering is a great way to prepare the skin, as the steam opens the pores and makes shaving much easier.  Some choose to use soap or other lubricating agents, but it's wise to never apply soap or these shaving gel products directly to dry skin.  Following this simple home remedy is a great way to avoid ingrown hairs.

It's commonly known that it's important to shave in the direction of the hair growth to avoid any kind of ingrown hair or irritation on the skin.  Shaving with an electric razor doesn't always allow you to control which way you're shaving.  These razors tend to move the hair in every direction, so use a regular, non-electric razor to help you to shave in one direction.

Once you know which direction your hair grows, you'll begin shaving in the same direction every day.  It's also important that you don't use too much pressure when shaving.  After a few weeks of shaving in the same direction (every time you shave), and using the appropriate amount of pressure, your hair will begin to grow out straight.  This home remedy is great for avoiding ingrown hairs.

Modern razors have several blades (some come with three, four or five blades) that promise to deliver the closest shave possible.  While this can be great for some, if you suffer from ingrown hairs, then you won't want to be using one of these razors. Using so many blades isn't very good for your skin and can irritate it, leading to more ingrown hairs.  Instead, use a single blade or disposable razors.  If you can even use a safety razor, you'll find that you can adjust the closeness of the razor.  This is a great way to treat ingrown hairs and keeps you from developing more in the future.

Ingrown hairs are irritated and made worse when a dull razor is continually dragged over then.  To avoid making ingrown hairs worse, try to use a new razor every time you shave.  This fresh razor keeps the ingrown hairs from being pulled.  This is a very effective home remedy for ingrown hairs.

It isn't uncommon to find that an ingrown hair has become infected.  To treat this with a home remedy, simply take a break from shaving.  Dragging a razor over an already ingrown hair that is starting to get infected will only make the infection worse – and you more uncomfortable.  Instead, wash the affected area with an antibacterial soap.  You should find that the inflammation from the infected ingrown hair will diminish quickly if you follow this simple home remedy of not shaving and washing with soap that has antibacterial properties.

When first learning how to shave (especially young men that are just experiencing their first beard growth), it's wise to shave with a lighter hand.  Applying too much pressure while shaving can cause ingrown hairs.  Avoid this by letting the razor do all of the work.
