Neck Pain Natural Home Remedies, Cures & Treatments

Heat Pack

Use a hot water bottle to get relief from neck pain. You can further enhance this by making moist heat. Wrap a damp towel around the hot water bottle and apply it to your neck. Never use electric heating pads or heating blankets as the alternating electromagnetic field makes the flow of Chi in the body chaotic. This is a great home remedy for neck pain.

Peppermint Oil

Blend several drops of peppermint oil with olive oil or almond oil and rub this into the areas of your neck which are having pain.

Massage

That which we call a crick in the neck is the presence of muscle spasms and these can be relieved with massage. For the first few days the massage should be gentle after which more pressure can be used to penetrate deeply into the muscles. Concentrate on muscles that feel knotted and ropey. Also concentrate on the muscles on the top of your shoulders.

Traction

You will need a little help to do this. This is something my chiropractor taught me. Get a large towel and roll it up tight long ways. A beach towel works good for this because it needs to be at least 3 feet long. Put the towel on the ground then lie on your back so the towel is under your neck. Then have your helper grab both ends of the towel and slowly lift your head up while pulling back as well. Do this for about 10 seconds and then slowly release. Do this cycle about 10 times per treatment and do the treatment several times during the day. This will cause the neck spine to decompress and the muscles to relax.

Neck Strain Treatment

For the first couple of days after a neck strain or the appearance of sore neck muscles avoid heat such as hot packs, hot tubs or direct hot showers. Heat and alcoholic beverages will make your swelling worse. After several days when the swelling has gone down you can apply heat. According to some medical professionals, alternating hot and cold is more effective. Stay with your daily activities if it is not creating any acute neck or back pain. Stop or change any routines that elevate your pain. Be conscious of your posture and avoid carrying your head in a forward position or slouching. Wad up your pillow under your neck when sleeping in bed.

Hard Mattress

In Asian countries it is common knowledge that one can sleep on the floor to relieve the pain of a sore back and neck. We can apply that same technique by sleeping on a hard mattress. It has been shown conclusively that a hard mattress is much more efficient and effective in keeping our back and neck pain free than a soft one. This is one of the most effective natural home remedies for neck pain.
