Insomnia Natural Cures and Natural Home Remedies

Melatonin

Lots of people look to melatonin to help them fall asleep.  This is a widely used and very effective natural cure for insomnia.  Melatonin supplements are especially helpful for those that have had a change in their sleep cycle such as jet lag or people who do shift work.  Only take this before going to bed as the body makes melatonin mostly at night.  Taking it in the daytime would throw your cycle off.

Herbal Tea

As with anything else, the key to try different things and see what you respond to. There are lots of home cures for insomnia.  You can try chamomile, fennel team, anise or catnip.  Passion flower, melatonin and valerian root are also well known natural treatments for insomnia.  You'll want to find a brand and treatment that works well for you, and you won't know until you try the different home remedies available.  Each of these treatments has worked for someone – why not you?

One thing that you'll need to address with insomnia is to see if you have an underlying medical issue that is causing you to lose sleep.  If several home remedies haven't worked well for you, then you should pay a visit to your primary health care provider to ensure that there isn't a medical issue that needs to be addressed.  Another great way to treat insomnia is to keep a sleep/wake journal.  Write down when you wake up during the night.  By keeping a written account of the times you awaken during the night, this can help you pinpoint the causes of your insomnia.  Also record how you feel in the morning, what time you wake up, what you're thinking, what you ate and drank before bed, etc.  By keeping a journal for a few months, you may be surprised by what you find.

Exercise not only helps to keep you looking your best, but it can also help you to sleep better at night.  Try to exercise daily, and do it outside if at all possible.  Studies have shown that if your body temperature is kept high throughout the day, then it will drop as night approaches, and this makes it easier to sleep.  So, if your exercise outside during the day, you're helping your body temperature to rise and you're helping yourself to sleep at night! This is a wonderful double natural remedy for insomnia!

Be sure to keep a regular sleep cycle.  You should go to bed and wake up at the same time every day – even on the weekends. Your body adjusts to a natural sleep/wake cycle and it's important that you don't disturb this; especially if you suffer from insomnia.  This is one of the best ways to naturally treat insomnia.

You can visit a holistic therapist to really pinpoint the things you can do naturally to help treat insomnia.  Some of the best natural treatments include massage, chiropractic alignments, reflexology, acupuncture and more.

While exercise is great for naturally treating insomnia, try not to do it too late at night.  Exercising at night actually raises your body temperature and makes you really alert.  Instead, try to exercise earlier in the day (first thing in the morning is the best time!), so that you're focused and alert during the day, not right before retiring to bed!

Diet for Insomnia

You cannot expect to obtain quality sleep without eating quality foods.  Try to feed your body only organic fruits and vegetables.  Eat lots of fresh green vegetables to get the best quality sleep.  You may also want to take a multivitamin if you still feel like you aren't getting all of your nutrients in your diet.  By making simple dietary changes, you can have a big impact on your insomnia with these natural cures.

Try to forget about your day.  While this can be difficult to do, try to leave the office and your issues that come along with your job at the office.  Leave yourself a to-do list if you can't get everything done.  If you can't sleep because you're angry or something was said in an argument before bedtime, try to write your thoughts down in a journal.  Don't re-read the journal before going to sleep.  Simply transfer your thoughts to paper, close the journal and lay down and close your eyes.  You'll be surprised by how much better you'll feel by just writing your thoughts down.  When you wake up, if you still feel these thoughts and feelings lingering, then try to talk to the person that the feelings regard.  If you can't do that, try to talk to someone else that you trust or to a professional.  These are wonderful home cures for insomnia that are effective and work well if done correctly.

Don't stare at the clock.  One of the most effective home remedies for insomnia is simple time management.  If you find yourself playing the “If... then...” game (if I fall asleep now, then I'll get 5 hours of sleep...), give yourself fifteen to twenty minutes to fall asleep.  If you aren't asleep by the end of those twenty minutes, experts recommend getting out of bed and going into a different room.  Do something quiet like reading a book or listening to relaxing music until you begin to feel tired again.  Staying in bed is only going to make things worse, and you can't force yourself to sleep.

Valerian Root

Valerian is a very powerful natural remedy for insomnia.  Some people don't like the taste of smell of valerian and choose to ingest it in capsule form.  If you begin a Valerian regimen, be aware that it takes approximately two to three weeks for it to begin to work completely.  Do not use this treatment for more than three months continually at a time.  You may experience dizziness, palpitations, headache and mild indigestion.

Kava Insomnia Natural Home Remedy

While Kava is a wonderful natural remedy for insomnia, it should be taken with caution.  It is especially helpful when used to treat insomnia that is caused by anxiety.  The FDA has advised people that there is a severe liver risk associated with Kava supplements, so be sure to use caution.
