Depression Natural Home Remedies

Magnesium

Take magnesium as a depression natural home remedy.  The USDA stated in a study that 75% of persons in the US do not get even the minimum daily requirement for magnesium.  Magnesium is called the “Cadillac of Minerals” because so many other minerals and biological mechanisms depend on it.  It has a calming effect on the nervous system.

Light Therapy

Seasonal mood swings can be problematic for many individuals during winter months when the sun shines the least amount of time. Getting good exposure to sunlight in the morning hours aids the body in establishing a proper sleep-wake cycle.  This morning exposure turns on the production of serotonin which is a mood influencing brain chemical.  In the winter when the nights are longer, levels of serotonin can decrease.  A walk outdoors in the morning can be all that it takes.

Drink a tea made from a fourth teaspoon of powdered cardamom to relieve depression.

***

In a cup of warm water, mix a tablespoon of Indian Gooseberry (Amla) juice with an eighth teaspoon of nutmeg powder.  Do this 3 times daily.

***

Eat more fruits, whole grains and vegetables and less meat, dairy and processed foods.

***

Use good smelling flowers, colored lights and lots and lots of sunshine to get rid of depression.  Frequent trips outdoors into fresh air is also helpful.

***

Take 2 capsules of St. John’s Wort three times daily to improve one’s disposition.

***

Get a massage by a professional if you are having depression.  This is a great home remedy.  You can also have your spouse watch and learn how to do it to you.  This elevates the quantities of endorphins which removes depression and gives an overall feeling that all is well.

***

Depression is not the same as bipolar disorder.  Studies have shown that anti-depressants can make bipolar people even more depressed and actually suicidal.  I am bipolar and anti-depressants made me worse.

Love as Natural Remedy

When feeling depressed, try not to put distance between yourself and family and friends.  This makes you feel like everyone and everything is working against you.  If you stay close to those persons who love you, they will help you stay focused.  Depression is something that is easier if you have help.  Everyone needs someone.  If you faith is strong enough you can do this with the Supreme Being or Nature.  The most important thing is to focus on love.  Meditate on love.  Try to feel love for others, your pet, nature and all of life.  Feel the love.  You will have to work at this at first.  But be patient and meditate on love.

When you feel a bout of depression coming on, get active.  Do some chores like vacuuming or washing the car.  Go outside and be productive.  Make yourself do this even though you don’t feel like it.

***

Go for a walk for 30 minutes.  This helps me a lot.  Plus, you can try to smile more and make conversation with strangers.  Smiling has a proven therapeutic effect.  It turns on certain aspects of the brain that help with the depression.  Prayer also helps a lot.

***

Sunshine

If you can’t get in enough sunlight, you can get full spectrum lights.  Sunlight is one of the best depression natural home remedies.

***

Sun bathing for 15 or 20 minutes always always always provides very noticeable relief when my depression and anxiety get out of hand.

5-HTP as Depression Natural Home Remedy

5-HTP is something your body makes naturally but it can get low and cause depression.  Fortunately you can buy it as a supplement in the health food store.  It helps regulate the serotonin in your brain.  Try it out it might be all that is needed.
