Chest Congestion Home Remedies & Natural Treatments

Chest congestion is a very unpleasant condition often accompanied by pain.  The lungs become filled with fluids such as mucus or phlegm.  A cough often accompanies chest congestion which is the natural way for the body to eliminate the accumulation of fluids.  The act of breathing can often become noisy if a person has severe congestion in the chest.  There may be a rattling noise and the breathing is laborious with a tenacious cough and accompanying pains in the chest.

Steam Home Remedy for Chest Congestion

Breathing steam is a great home remedy for chest congestion.  Vaporizers are machines that you can purchase in any drug store for very little money.  Use the vaporizers that heat the water into steam as opposed to the ones that use ultrasound or other devices to turn water into vapor (these will grow bacteria and molds because there is no heat to kill them).  You can also put boiling water into a large bowl and then put your face over the bowl and put a towel over your head to hold the steam in place.  The hot steam will break up the phlegm that has hardened and become stuck in the lungs.  This will allow you to more easily cough out the phlegm.

Vapor Therapy

Put a wet (but not dripping wet) washcloth in the microwave for about 30 seconds.  Then put some pure essential oil of eucalyptus (not synthetic fragrance) on the wash cloth and inhale the vapors.  You can also put eucalyptus in a hot steam vaporizer cup.

Tiger's Balm Natural Home Remedy for Chest Congestion

For chest congestion a great remedy is to put Tiger’s Balm all over your chest and throat.  Then Heat a damp towel in the microwave and put the towel folded to the size of your chest on your chest.  Has the hot steamy heat in the towel begins to cool, open the towel and fold it in half the opposite way so that what was the middle of the towel is now on the outside.  This gives you another cycle without having to reheat the damp towel.  Repeat this several times and do it several times a day.
