Menopause Natural Remedies & Home Cures

In the narrowest definition, menopause marks the end of all menstrual bleeding and is generally experienced by women between the ages of 48 and 52. When the ovaries cease producing estrogen, menopause begins but the estrogen levels do not go to zero. Some estrogen will still be made in fat cells, in the intestinal tract and in the tissue surrounding the ovaries. Many natural treatments seek to utilize this estrogen reserve.

Bioflavinoids and Hot Flashes

Medical research studies have demonstrated that bioflavonoids have a remarkable ability to control and subdue hot flashes. Along with bioflavonoids, one should consider taking potassium, magnesium, calcium, vitamin E, and flax seed oil.

The Estrogen Story

Around 1965 we began giving post-menopausal women horse estrogen which is extracted from horse urine. The astounding popularity of this occurred in spite of the fact that there was absolutely no proof or scientific basis for doing this. There was no clinical evidence that estrogen supplementation could provide any benefit. By the year 1975, women who had subscribed to estrogen replacement therapy were showing up with 800% more cancers of the uterus and many other serious problems. It is a fallacy in medical thinking that estrogen levels become lower in women after menopause, and that these reduced levels are directly to blame for all the numerous problems suffered by women. Included in this assessment is everything from hot flashes to night sweats to depression. Innumerable clinical studies have proven the opposite is true. Unfortunately, physicians simply ignore all of the other basic hormones. The big lie continues that horse estrogen is a magic bullet and that women are not required to be tested for their three basic estrogen levels. The three basic estrogens are estriol, estrone and estradiol. 80 to 90% of a woman's estrogen is estriol which is the "forgotten estrogen." It is the most beneficial and the safest estrogen but is rarely prescribed as a therapy. Estrone makes up approximately 5 to 10% of estrogen and is much stronger than estriol. Estradiol comprises the remaining 5 to 10% of estrogen. This is the most dangerous and most powerful of the three estrogens. It is 12 times more powerful than estrone and 80 times more powerful than estriol. Women are typically informed by their doctors that they are low in estradiol without even testing the levels. As a matter of fact, women normally need to reduce the levels of this estrogen. You should do saliva testing (more accurate than a blood test) to balance all three estrogens. In addition, if you're taking in and having tried on because it won't fit both up half the things we buy don't fit and he may and he may not like it I think he's digging in her if she's not the issue is not that big a deal taking if he doesn't like it or if it doesn't fit you think it back okay the following basic hormones fall after menopause and they should be tested and then balanced: progesterone, pregnenolone, melatonin, T3, T4, DHEA and testosterone.  Go here to read more about Estriol the Beneficial Estrogen.  You can read a great short book on how to get your own saliva testing done and all about estrogen at www dot youngagain dot org/books.html and pull down the page to the book Natural Health for Women formerly titled No More Horse Estrogen.  It is free as a PDF file.

Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy

The basic premise of BHRT (a.k.a. Natural Hormone Replacement Therapy or NHRT) is to restore the levels of your body's hormones to be as they were in your 30s. If your hormones are not balanced then one should consider undertaking a detoxification program. This is because both the gastrointestinal tract and the liver are both necessary for the normal processing and removal of hormones that have reached excessive levels. If these organs are not working as they should, then an imbalance of hormones may occur. Most bioidentical hormones are extracted from wild yams and soybeans. These contain special compounds that are subjected to a chemical process making them into exact replicas of the body's own hormones. These are used because they are inexpensive and, most importantly, they are easily converted into identical replicas of human hormones. Also they are far less toxic than orthodox synthetic hormones. Many synthetic hormones are extracted from other animals, such as sheep, horses and pigs. Premarin, as an example, is made from pregnant mare’s urine and it is not the same as the estrogen which is naturally produced in the body of a human being. When you take Premarin you also get 50 other forms of estrogen and, of these, only three occur in humans.

The dose of bioidentical hormones is determined by testing saliva. Only in the last few years have saliva tests been perfected and they are more accurate than blood tests. Because these tests are somewhat new, many physicians are not familiar with them and so they do not use them. Physicians who have no training in interpreting saliva results are unaware of the significance of this method of testing.

Because your physician will prescribe a customized, individually tailored prescription based on your test results, your bioidentical hormones must be made by a compounding pharmacist. These pharmacists make medications from scratch utilizing raw powders and chemicals. In the 1930s and 1940s approximately 60% of all medications in the USA were compounded.

Soy and Isoflavones

If a woman increases her intake of soy and isoflavones (these are found in plants like beans, and are especially found in high concentrations in soybeans), she'll find that this can be an especially wonderful natural remedy for treating menopause.  This natural remedy is particularly beneficial when used to treat the uncomfortable night sweats and hot flashes when used for a short term treatment (about two years or less).  If the woman chooses to continue this natural remedy as a long-term treatment, she'll find that there are also benefits from the isoflavones and soy on her bones and cholesterol.  However, if the woman has a history of estrogen-dependent breast cancer, this natural remedy can be harmful.

St. John's Wort as Natural Remedy for Menopause

Some women develop moderate or mild depression at the onset of menopause.  If this is the case, then a wonderful natural treatment for this symptom of menopause is St. John's Wort.  This is especially helpful when taken as a short-term (less than two years) treatment.  A typical dosage of this should be mess than 1.2 milligrams each day.  It is important to note that there have been scientific studies that show that this is not an effective treatment for severe depression.  A common side effect of St. John's Wort is an increased sensitivity to the sun.  It may also cause an unsafe drug interaction with some prescription anti-depressants.  It is important to check for any potential interactions if you are currently prescribed anti-depressants.

Foods with Estrogenic Substances

You'll need to increase the body's level of estrogen, and this should be done in a safe why by adding foods to your diet that are naturally high in estrogenic substances.  These foods include sunflower seeds, peas, oats, papaya, olive oil, beets, cabbage, anise seed, apples, corn, cucumbers, pumpkin seeds, yams, wheat, sesame seeds, green beans, garlic, flaxseed, soy, and Alfalfa.  Not only are these foods high in estrogenic substances, they are also high in vitamins and minerals.  They are also loaded with fiber, which is important not only for women in menopause, but they are also healthful and important no matter your stage of life.
