Frostbite Natural Treatments & Home Remedies

If you suspect frostbite, the first treatment should be to elevate the affected area.  This will help to reduce any swelling.

Additional heat loss should be avoided by moving to a warm area, if this is at all possible.  Warming the affected area will be the first goal, and this can be achieved quickly in a warmer area.

While this isn't the case with all instances of frostbite, many people suffering from frostbite will also be suffering from hypothermia.  If this is the case, saving the individual's life is far more important than saving a frost bitten toe, finger or foot.  Be sure to keep priorities in check when treating frostbite and that the ultimate well-being of the human life at hand is not lost.

Blood flow can by blocked by restrictive clothes and jewelry.  Remove any articles of clothing or jewelry that can cause a restricted blood flow to the affected area.  While this will not cure frostbite, allowing more blood to flow to the region will help to heal the frostbitten area more quickly.

Warm Fluids Frostbite Treatment

Try to give the individual warm fluids to drink.  This will not only warm their core body temperature, but warm liquids can be soothing and can help to treat the frostbite.  It is important that you do not serve them any fluids with caffeine or alcohol.  These substances can inhibit blood flow and can actually make the frostbite worse.  This is a useful frostbite home remedy.

Use a sterile, dry bandage and apply it to the affected area.  If the frostbitten body parts are fingers or toes, separate each digit with cotton.  This will help to prevent rubbing or chafing of the body parts.  Once the wounds are properly dressed, seek medical attention from a healthcare provider as soon as possible.

If there is a chance that the affected body part may become frozen again, do not warm or thaw the frostbitten body part.  This is an ineffective treatment and can actually cause more harm than good.  If a thaw-refreeze cycle is begun, the results will be far worse than the original effects of the initial frost bite.

Try to avoid gradually thawing the frostbitten body part.  It is best to re-warm the area quickly and thoroughly.  If you are not in an area where this is possible, wait to try to re-warm the body part until you are in an area where you can properly warm and treat the frostbitten body part.

Do not allow any friction on the frostbitten area.  While some may advise rubbing snow on the affected area, this is actually one of the worst things you can do for frostbite.  The friction that is caused by rubbing the frostbitten area will cause the body's tissues to be further damaged.

One of the best treatments for frostbite is immediate transport to a facility that can properly warm and treat the affected areas.  The severity and longevity of the injury is directly related to how long the body part was frozen, not by the actual temperature to which the tissue was exposed.  This is why it is so important to recognize the signs of frostbite and begin to immediately transport the victim to a proper treatment facility immediately.

Do not ever massage frostbitten tissue.  While one may think that this friction will warm the body part, it actually just causes additional trauma and tissue damage.

* * *

Hot water should never be used to warm a frostbitten body part or any frostbitten tissue.  This can only cause greater injury and damage.

If the frostbite has affected the patient's feet, do not allow them to walk.  Instead, carry the individual to a proper treatment area, or at least to a warmer area.  Walking on frostbitten feet will cause great damage to the delicate areas of the feet.
