Muscle Cramps Home Remedies & Natural Cures

Mustard, Pickle Juice, Apple Cider Vinegar

Try this home remedy for muscle cramps.  Chances are you have both of these ingredients in your kitchen right now.  Both pickle juice and mustard contain acetic acid.  This is important because acetic acid aids the body in producing acetylcholine, which works as a stimulant for your leg muscles.  You can get the great benefits of this from a spoonful of mustard or just a few ounces of pickle juice.  You can also try using apple cider vinegar because it has lots of potassium.  One of my favorite natural remedies for muscle cramps is a mixture of apple cider vinegar (about ten milliliters) with one teaspoon of honey in a glass of warm water.  Drink this mixture and you'll be able to see a great improvement.

Ayurvedic Remedies

A great Ayurvedic remedy for cramping in muscles to make a homemade teabag with black or brown mustard seeds and soak them in a tub full of hot water.  You should them allow your feet to soak in this tub for about twenty minutes.  This will quickly relieve muscle cramps.  You can also make an herbal massage oil out of extra-virgin olive oil or almond oil and a tincture make with a quarter of an ounce of wintergreen or willow bark, one ounce of cramp bark, and a half ounce of lobelia.  This mixture and homemade massage oil can be stored in an airtight jar and used as needed to relax muscles that are cramping.

Cayenne

For several years I have been plagued with cramping muscles.  To get rid of this dilemma, I made a salve by combining cayenne pepper with coconut oil.  Warm the oil at the lowest heat possible and then stir in cayenne pepper to the point that it starts to thicken so it is a spreadable salve.  Rub this into the problem area and massage it for a while.  This works wonders.  Don’t forget to wash your hands really well after using the salve so you don’t accidentally rub your eyes with it.

Potassium Magnesium

Lack of potassium is the most significant cause of muscle spasms and leg cramps. Many folks don’t realize that another cause is lack of magnesium.  The USDA estimates the 75% of us don’t even get the minimum daily requirement for magnesium in our standard American diets (SAD).  As far as potassium, you can get the right amount of it in your diet and still be depleted due to sodium ion poisoning.  This condition is the result of too much sodium in the diet – salt.  The sodium pushes out the potassium at the cellular level and the normal flow of potassium in and out of the cells is diminished.  Take potassium and magnesium supplements and cut out the salt.  You can soak in Epsom Salts which is magnesium sulfate.  Your skin will absorb the magnesium and it will cause the muscles to relax.

Homeopathy for Muscle Cramps

Try Magnesia Phosphorica in applications where muscle cramps are soothed with heat.  Causticium and Ignatia Amara are prescribed when muscles and joints feel stiff as is often the case when muscles are overworked.  Calcarea Carbonica is also used when exertion is the source of the pain.  This can be taken when doing a lot of physical exercise or if the job is physically demanding.

Stretch and Massage

Muscle cramps can commonly happen after vigorous exercise.  To treat these kinds of muscle cramps, you should stop exercising immediately.  Stretch out and use your thumb and forefinger to knead the cramping area.  By massaging the muscles, you'll help them get back to their normal shape and they'll stop cramping so much.  This is a great natural home remedy for treating muscle cramps.

Heat and Massage

If this is the first time that you have experienced cramping in a certain muscle, treat it with heat first.  Apply heat for a short amount of time (no longer than fifteen minutes), then massage the muscle.  Alternate heat with massage for a few seconds.  You should continue repeating this until the pain is gone.

Hydration and Salt Balance

Muscle cramps can be avoided if you keep yourself well hydrated.  If you know that you are going to have a big workout later or participating in any sports, make sure that you drink plenty of water beforehand.  You should also keep energy drinks like Gatorade or Powerade on hand so that you can replenish lost electrolytes from sweating.  You can also maintain your electrolyte balance by simply taking a salt tablet containing both sodium and potassium salts. This is one of the best home remedies for muscle cramps.

Slowly Increase Physical Activity

Increase your aerobic activity gradually.  If you aren't exercising regularly, ease into your new program.  While exercise is good for you, keep in mind that it's easy to overdo it, especially if you aren't used to doing physical activity.  If you do too much too soon, you'll really find your muscles cramping up on you.  Instead, slowly increase your activity levels to avoid muscle cramps and injury.
